Medical education has been matter of evolution since thousands of years ago. Nowadays, significant growth of technologies, particularly information and communication technology have directed medical education more toward learner-based structured educations through e-learning and web-based systems. Concurrently, with logarithmic tendency of youngsters toward web 2.0 applications and facilities, we can see a global propensity to semantics. While we are going to complete the maturation era of web2.0 in different areas, the application of semantics has a long way to go.
After evaluation of audiences and their manner of interaction with web and medical education, we determined to design a web-based system which lets the users not only to employ it for their daily educational activities in their classes like as taking note, reading books and papers, but also employ all networking (social networking) and other web2.0 tools to learn, create and share their knowledge in a standard meaningful environment for semantic searches among all of available resources.
The main idea behind XHUM3D® has been exhumation of medical knowledge by the learners from resources. This could be happened either through educational procedures or by conducting researches. The main axis of connection of wide variety of medical science resources would be the human body and standard nomenclature of SNOMED-CT in medicine. We have employed visual human body 3D visualization accompanied by books, lecture notes, multimedia resources and social networking facilities in a simple user interface that would be easily learnable and usable to the medical students. Basic semantic tools in this system in the latest version is locally implemented to provide manual tagging of almost all elements in the system by standard nomenclature of SNOMED-CT, and text processing of the book contents and tagging with the same ontology. A semantic search facility is available for user to find all of the meaningful standard tags in all resources (notebook, book, multimedia and 3D bodies).
